Taiwan' s lobbying against Beijing's "One Chinese" Request
Taiwan's lobbying have successfully persuaded the U.S. and the European Union to sidestep Beijing's 'one China' policy in the agreement on its entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO), according to Vice Economics Minister Steve R.C. Chen.
Mr. Chen, the key figure in
charge of Taiwan's WTO bid, announced that he and Chiou I-jen,
deputy secretary-general of the National Security Council, had
visited Washington and Geneva earlier this month in an effort to
dissuade Western countries from accepting Beijing's attempt to
bring pressures on Taiwan to the global trading organizations.
During their stay in Geneva, Chen and Chiu met with members of
the WTO's working group on Beijing's entry into the body, and
successfully convinced them that the cross-strait issue is
political in nature and should therefore be excluded from the WTO,
Chen said.
Beijing is trying to incorporate into its WTO accession according
to a statement that effect Taiwan is part of China. Although
Beijing has done a great efffort to enforce its claim that Taiwan
is one of its provinces, Chen said he believes that their
lobbying will against the mainland China's attempt.
