Yahoo! will heat up the WAP portal market in Taiwan
On June 26, Jerry Yang, a co-founder of Yahoo, stated that Yahoo will soon debut a WAP (wireless application protocol) Web portal in Taiwan, that will heating up the competition in the domestic market for wireless Internet services. Yang formed strategic alliances with Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Cellular Corporation, and KG Telecom Co. to develop the domestic WAP market.
According to their agreement, Chunghwa, Taiwan Cellular, and KG Telecom will base their WAP-based services on Yahoo!'s search engine, allowing their customers access the Web from their mobile phones. Yahoo! will extend its cooperation with Internet and communication companies in Taiwan to provide wireless Web content, including online e-mail service and real-time headline news.
The strategic alliance
pressures domestic Internet companies, like HiNet, Systex Group,
Seednet, and Hong Kong-based Netvigator, to speed-up their own
WAP plans. Taiwan is the first Asian market that Yahoo! will
market its WAP-based portal site.
