Taiwan's GNP will to hit a high record of US$325.4 billion

Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) predicted Taiwan's annual gross national product (GNP) will break the US$300 billion mark for the first time and hit a record high of US$325.4 billion (approx. NT$10 trillion) in 2000.

DGBAS forecast that Taiwan's per capita GNP will reach a new high of US$14,634 in 2000. Comparing with the previous high of US$13,559 recorded in 1997. The high GNP would significantly boost the buying power of people in Taiwan.

In 1999,  Taiwan's GNP reached US$290.8 billion (NT$9.38 trillion), US$13,248 in per
capita GNP, which was lower than the corresponding figure of US$13,559 in 1997 but higher than US$12,333 in 1998. The lower figure in 1998 was result from the Asian financial turmoil.

The expected from DFBAS encouraging economic performance for this year, in turn, is to be fueled by strong domestic demand and booming export trade.

Taiwan's per capita GNP broke the US$3,000 mark in 1984, doubled to US$6,000 in 1988, and stood up US$10,000in 1992.
