DGBAS expected moderate price rises in 2000
The Directorate General of Budget, Accounting & Statistics (DGBAS) under the Executive
Yuan (Cabinet) predicted that commodity prices will rise moderately in this year, and the
increase should be around the 2.11% rise projected earlier.
DGBAS officials said the key factors for the price increases included the boost in
industrial materials and the global economic recovery. The wholesale price index rose
1.19% in January. Comparing the same month of 1999 while the consumer price index edged up
0.51%. The average import price jumped by 9.68% in last month to the highest level
in pass 54 months.
In January fruit and vegetable prices fell 0.34%. But prices for the transport service
increased 2.77% due to the rising gasoline costs. The prices of electric machinery and
telecom equipment went down 5.66% that result from the price drops for products like
mobile phones.
DGBAS officials said that even if they have to adjust the 2000 consumer price index
upward, the adjustment will only be a minor one.
